Guided Tours of Pico
Our bike, walking and jeep trails have been carefully designed and perfected by us to show you not only some of Pico’s most famous sites and beauty spots but also some of its best kept secrets. So that you can get to really explore and appreciate the island as we do.
Bike tours we run two regular cycling tours. The first is a medium difficulty tour from Vila de Sao Roque heading along ancient pathways and trails bordered by lush plants and flowers to the foot of the mountain and breathtaking views over the islands of Sao Jorge, Faial and Graciosa. You then cycle onwards to Lagoa do Capitao, a place of unique natural beauty. The second is a harder mountain biking tour through the natural park to the lagoons and mountains- well worth the challenge!
Walking Trails we offer a variety of walking trails. The trails meander along little paths taking in the stunning landscape, unusual fauna and flora, traditional villages and dramatic coastline. The Azores are particularly famous for their abundant and interesting flowers, bird and animal life. You will be accompanied along the route by an experienced and knowledgeable local guide.
Jeep Tours choose between two guided tours to see the best of Pico. The first tour includes: a visit to the wine museum in Madalena and a jeep tour through the UNESCO world heritage protected landscapes of traditional vineyards. You will stop along the coast at Cais Mourato, Cachorro, Lajido Sta Luzia, Arcos and Cabrito, enjoy a liquor tasting and visit the natural swimming pools of Sao Roque do Pico. After lunch the tour continues through the central plateau stopping at a number of picturesque lakes including the Captain’s Lake before reaching Madalena and visiting Porto do Calhau, Pocinho and Criação Velha.
The second tour is similar in the morning but in the afternoon as well as the lakes you will also visit Lajes do Pico and the Whaler’s Museum before returning to Madalena via the south side of the island near Porto S. Caetano and Guindaste. Please contact us for full information and rates!
Mountain Climbing
The quintessential Pico experience! Our experienced guides will hike with you up Portugal’s highest peak. As you climb to the summit of Pico Mountain at 2351m you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the islands and the Atlantic. We recommend leaving early to enjoy sunrise on the mountain. Climbing experience is not necessary but you will need hiking boots and a good, basic level of fitness to hike for approximately 7 hours.
