Horse Riding Holidays in Portugal
Our horse riding holidays in Portugal are set here on our sunny farm near Gois. We have 8 horses who live here with us and are treated very much as part of the family along with our 3 dogs and a variety of smaller animals.
The area is absolutely stunning, always green and lush all year round even in mid summer, due to the wonderfully clean mountain river that runs through our valley. There are mixed forests of eucalyptus, pine, mimosa (in flower late February/early March) and of course olives and orange orchards. In the autumn, the heady smell of ripe grapes fills the air. In spring, wild flowers and herbs carpet the ground, and the orange blossom.....wow!
Our horse riding holidays are very flexible so it is hard to have a strict itinery, each week is different and depends totally on what the guests want.
You would start your day with breakfast served on the veranda by hubby Steve who is your cook for the week. Sandra takes out the rides and will discuss with you what sort of ride you would like each day. We offer riding from one hour hacks to 5 hour treks with picnic lunch. We can also give lessons to beginners/novices.
We do not mix abilities unless the more experienced rider is happy to do so...eg. because you want to ride with less experienced family or friends.

An average itinery for our horse riding holidays in Portugal would be:
Sunday
After breakfast you can groom and tack up your horse, this can be done for you if you prefer, or Sandra can help you if you would like to learn. We would set off on a 2 - 3 hour hack across the river and up into the hills on the other side passing through lovely little mountain villages and having a good long canter through pine forests ( this can be taken at a trot or slower canter if required).
Home for lunch on the veranda, the afternoon can be spent swimming in the river which flows just 50 metres from our farm, walking, or just chilling out!
If you want to ride again in our school late afternoon/evening then this is fine.
Monday
Picnic ride, we have many destinations for our picnics, shorter ones for families and longer ones for more experienced riders. They are all to stunning locations and often to river spots so you can swim and cool off after your ride.
Tuesday is a day off. You can of course stay here and chill out by the river, or we can arrange a day canoe trip, or a trip to the farm of a dressage rider where you can have a lesson on her Lusitano stallion. The historic city of Coimbra is another lovely way to pass the day.
Wednesday
We will set out after breakfast for a 3.5 hour ride in a different direction, exploring fantastic trails through eucalyptus, pine, and mimosa (in flower early March) forests, and also passing through charming villages with friendly locals.
Thursday
Another lovely ride in a different direction. It is possible to ride in the school later in the day.
Friday
Picnic ride. For your last day with us, we take you on another of our fantastic picnic rides. By now you will really be getting a feel for this little piece of paradise, and hopefully will want to return!
Saturday
The end of your horse riding holidays in Portugal and after breakfast it's time to say goodbye to your trusty horse and of course us too! We do check suitcases to see if there are any hooves or paws sticking out......
