Douro: Castles and Wine Bike Tour
This challenging route takes you off the beaten track and into the heart of Northern Portugal from the central plateau to the Douro valley. This is an area packed with natural beauty and historical interest and you'll be cycling through two UNESCO world heritage areas! The central plateau is a little known but fascinating area which includes the Coa valley whose open air Paleolithic rock carvings are acknowledged as the world's finest. You will feel a million miles away from your day-to-day life in this sparsely populated corner of Portugal cycling along ancient routes in quiet countryside dotted with little villages and medieval towns.
The tour then takes you into the Douro valley where the river meanders below terraced vineyards and hill top castles. There is lots to see in the historic towns of Ucanha, Lamego and Peso de Regua before a welcome descent to your last hotel. In the summer you can return to Porto in style cruising along the river Douro, at other times of the year or if boats aren't your cup of tea we'll transfer you back by road including a museum visit.
This tour is aimed at strong, experienced cyclists as it is hilly and 75% on quiet roads and 25% offroad. It is possible to do it all onroad if you prefer. It is an 8 day tour and starts from €939.
The Easy Atlantic Bike Tour
As the name suggests this is the easiest of our Northern Portugal bike tours and it is suitable for leisurely cyclists as it is mainly flat and on quiet roads and bike paths. The tour follows the coastline from Porto in the North to Sao Pedro de Moel in Central Portugal. The focus is as always on the cultural and natural beauties of this land.
Highlights include all the attractions of Porto from its historical streets to its Port wine cellars, the tranquil beauty of the Ria de Aveiro wetlands and dunes, the pretty town of Aveiro with its canal system and winding your way through quiet countryside and ancient forests. This is a 7 day tour staying in superior quality hotels and starts from €749.
The Portuguese Way to Santiago
This tour follows the Caminho Portugues, an ancient pilgrimage route from Porto to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. After a day to explore the medieval streets of Porto, you'll set out on a five day ride up the beautiful coastline and countryside of Portugal and Galicia. This is the least well known of the pilgrimage routes so you can avoid the crowds and enjoy the tranquility of nature.
Along the way you'll discover historic towns and villages, diverse coastal, country and woodland scenery, the natural park of the Litoral Norte and the Rias Baixas in Galicia before arriving at the cathedral city of Santiago de Compostela. As a pilgrimage or just as a beautiful, historical cycling route this is an unforgettable ride. This 8 day tour is suited to regular, fit cyclists with three flat cycling days and two hilly days. It is 80% on quiet roads and lanes and 20% offroad (a 100% onroad version is available) and starts from €799.
